How well do you know your vision?

Let me be really clear and ask you that question again. How well do you know your vision?

We all know the power of a well formed corporate vision; inspiring action and setting a clear direction, but when was the last time you sat down and thought about the vision you have for your own life?

I realised I had some ideas and ambitions but I’d not formed them properly or fully. They were little more than vague, semi-timeless ‘hopes’. I don’t think I’d even clearly shared them with my wife – my life partner! (We’re having that conversation now, it’s proving to be very interesting!)

If you’re anything like me, you’ve just been plodding along on auto-pilot, steadily making progress towards… somewhere. Somewhere you haven’t really thought about and might not particularly want.

Maybe it’s time to change that.

Just take a few minutes now and consider:

  • Where do you want to be in two or three years’ time in your personal life? (Start small, you can always increase the time-range).

  • What do you want to be doing?

  • Where do you want to be health-wise?

  • Who do you want to be with?

It’s okay to include some career goals in here because business life is personal but don’t simply focus on the business goals. Go beyond role, money and possessions, what do you want to achieve on a personal level? If it’s “Retired at 55”, retired to do what?

Get specific, be inspired and surprise yourself.
  • What milestones should you be setting as check-points towards achieving your vision?

  • What do you need to change about the way you are doing/being now in order to meet your personal vision?

  • Perhaps you could contrast this with your vision of where/what you will be if you change nothing about the way you are now?

Now that I’m sitting down and actually describing a compelling vision for my personal future, I’m getting more excited and more motivated to take deliberate steps towards it. For me that means that exercise is more purposeful, development is more focused and relationships are getting more attention.

Our potential for our tomorrow’s is based on what we do with our today’s

Don’t keep plodding towards vagueness, What does your vision look like?
